Migrant Workers Flashcards
What was the ‘dust bowl’? And why is it relevant to Of Mice and Men?
The ‘dust bowl’ was an area of America (Oklahoma and other great farming states) that became really dry and infertile from forced farming in the early 20th Century. In the 30s the workers from there packed up and left for California (where OMAM is set) which was still fertile farmland. They went to try and earn money.
What word is used to describe men who move from place to place trying to find work?
Itinerant
What was the Great Depression and how did it influence the text?
The stock market crash of 1929 only made matters really difficult for the average American. Banks were forced to foreclose on mortgages and collect debts. Unable to pay their creditors, many farmers lost their property and were forced to find other work.
How did the migrant worker lifestyle affect the ranch workers’ relationships in OMAM?
Think of quotes if you can!
Loneliness, no lasting friendships, inability to settle down and have families, poverty… There are more! Discuss them.
How would you define the American Dream?
Ideals of freedom, equality and opportunity! George and Lennie long for a place where they can be their own boss and: ‘live off the fatta the land’.
In the text Lennie often says: ‘live off the fatta the lan! ‘ what does this mean?
It means to live off the goods that they can farm and grow on their dream farm. Lennie and George- like many farm hands- longed to be self sufficient and rely on their own hard work, being independent from a boss or employer.
