Activity that people engage in during their free time, people enjoy, and for social reasons i.e.. anything that is not competitive.. sports, music, cart
What is play and provide an example
Multiple definitions of play..following characteristics are commonly used
- intrinsic motivation -process over product
- free choice -play is active
- suspension of reality -play is bound by rules
- positive affect -internal locus of control
What is classical view of leisure?
emphasizes contemplation, enjoyment of self in search of knowledge, debate, politics, and cultural enlightment
What is feminist leisure?
Critique that traditional definitions don’t reflect realities of human lives
What is leisure as a state of mind?
State of mind brought about by an activity freely engaged in and done for its own sake.. Defining characteristics include; perceived freedom, enjoyment, intrinsic motivation (personal choice)
What are some of the benefits of leisure in family?
- Opportunity for family to get together
- Can facilitate family bonding and cohesion
- Reinforce relationships between parents and children • Learn acceptable behaviours, values and traditions
What are some of the benefits of leisure in society?
- Transmits values, norms and priorities (cooperation, responsibility, helping others)
- Creates conformity or system of social organization
- Contributes to the Economy (represents the world’s largest single industry)
- Going to the movies • Vacations
- Video games etc.
- Improves the mental health and well being of workers and provides and escape
Being familiar with purple leisure, what activities could be considered “risky” and why?
Gambling or drinking because they can turn into an addiction
What is serious leisure, provide an example and why
systematic pursuit of an amateur, hobbyist, or volunteer activity that individuals find themselves tied to and spend a lot of hours involved with it. ex. athletes, entertainers… opportunity to make the leisure a career
Theories and models of leisure
Hierarchal model and negotiation of constraints- People adopt strategies to negotiate through the various levels to fulfill their leisure
• May have to adjust times
• Financial constraint
What are some leisure constraints?
intrapersonal- physiological states and attributes interacting with leisure preferences influencing choices
interpersonal- relationships between individuals
structural- intervening factors obstructing participation
*Constraints do not always mean non participation
How can leisure help with stress and/or cause stress?
Helps: used as taking a break, create valued meanings in life, help us understand and appreciate our place in the universe, maintain physical health, looking forward to something, accomplishment
Causes: Leisure can produce more stress through bullying, bad coaches, social comparison, discrimination, inequality, frustration
What is work life balance?
how people mesh their job with the rest of their life
What are some of the challenges in relation to rec and leis for marginalized populations
