Midterm study Flashcards
State the full name of the 12 meridians (in order of qi flow):
Lung / Hand Tai Yin → Large Intestine / Hand Yang Ming → Stomach / Foot Yang Ming → Spleen / Foot Tai Yin
Heart / Hand Shao Yin → Small Intestine / Hand Tai Yang → Urinary Bladder / Foot Tai Yang → Kidney / Foot Shao Yin
Pericardium / Hand Jue Yin → San Jiao / Hand Shao Yang → Gallbladder / Foot Shao Yang → Liver / Foot Jue Yin
** “Hand” or “Foot” = where shu transporting points are located
Order of qi flow (general body location)
Chest to Hand to Face to Foot (back to chest)
Yin - Yang / Interior - Exterior paired channels and organs
LU - LI
SP - ST
HT - SI
KD - UB
PC - SJ
LV - GB
6 levels of disease progression (in order)
Tai Yang - “greater yang”
Yang Ming - “yang brightness”
Shao Yang - “lesser yang”
Tai Yin - “greater yin”
Shao Yin - “lesser yin”
Jue Yin - “terminal/reverting yin”
TAI = GREATER
SHAO = LESSER
List the 6 channel division pairs:
- Tai Yin = LU + SP (sources of qi)
- Yang Ming = LI + ST
- Shao Yin = HT + KD (two “fires”)
- Tai yang = SI + UB (*most superficial?)
- Jue Yin = PC + LV (*deepest?)
- Shao Yang = SJ + GB
Jing Luo
“Channel network in body”
* Jing = longitudinal / vertical (primary) channels
* Luo = horizontal “net”
The circadian clock starts at ____ with the ____ organ
3-5am, Lung (Hand Tai Yin)
General functions of the channels (5):
- Connect/balance body parts and render the body an integrated whole
- Circulate qi and blood (to nourish the body)
- Protect the body
- Respond to dysfunction in the body (transmit pathogenic qi/demonstrate disease)
- Transmit qi to the diseased area
Secondary channels from superficial to deep (+ functions):
- Cutaneous (12) - skin, wei qi (overlay primary channels & can reflect disease)
- Minute collaterals - not mapped, ~capillaries, allows qi & blood to reach everywhere
- Sinew (12) - tendons, ligaments, muscle, fascia (movement, protection etc. Originate in extremities, nourished by primary channels)
- Luo-connecting (15) - branch out from primary channels, close connection to blood & emotions
- PRIMARY - external & internal pathways**
- Divergent - “dive deep”
- 8 Extraordinary - reservoirs
Shu transporting points (list, location + function)
- Jing well - most distal, acute/quick change (most nerve endings), “revive consciousness” / mental state
- Ying spring - 2nd most distal, clear HEAT + excess
- Shu stream - 3rd most distal, heaviness and joint pain
- Jing river - random location, coughing, asthma, voice…
- He sea - at elbow/knee, stomach & intestinal diseases
ALL AT EXTREMETIES
5 shu transporting points w/ elements (YIN channels)
Jing well (WOOD*)
Ying spring (fire)
Shu stream (earth)
Jing river (metal)
He sea (water)
- BUCKET - yin = wood
5 shu transporting points w/ elements (YANG channels)
Jing well (METAL*)
Ying spring (water)
Shu stream (wood)
Jing river (fire)
He sea (earth)
- BUCKET - yang = metal (handle)
Point whose element is the same as the element of the channel:
Horary point
Ex: metal point (jing river) of the metal channel (lung)
Ma dan yang heavenly star points:
Favorite/most important points according to this guy (he wrote a song about them)
Window of heaven points:
- “Reconnecting upper and lower”, Shen, ailments of sudden onset
- Majority on the NECK (baroreceptors)
Group Luo points:
Used when all 3 (yin or yang) channels of the arm/leg are affected
Ex: SP 6: Treats the three Yin meridians in the leg: SP, LV, and KD
“Ghost points”
- (13) Defined by Sun Si Mao, specific order
- For serious psycho-emotional issues, “possession” (by phlegm or something that is keeping you from being you)
Yuan source points:
- In YIN channels this is the SHU STREAM point (3rd most distal) & the primary tonification
- In YANG channels this is the 4th most distal and used to expel pathogenic factors
Yuan = orignal/source qi from KD: “motive force”
Command points:
Have strong and broad effects on their related part of the body…
- Abdomen = ST 36
- Lumbar & back = UB40
- Head / Nape = LU 7
- Face / Mouth = LI 4
Luo connecting points:
Points where a channel splits off from the Primary channel and connects with a paired channel (interior-exterior pairs)
Ex: LU 7: Helps the Large Intestine function
Used in conjunction w/ source points (“Guest-Host method”)
Xi-Cleft points:
- Moderate ACUTE CONDITIONS AND PAIN, as well as
- Blood disorders (yin channels only)
Back (Transporting) Shu Points
- Transport qi to the inner organs DIRECTLY (innervation to each organ)
- important in chronic/”yin” diseases: Tonify & warm
- Bladder channel down whole back
Front (Collecting) Mu points
- “Alarm points” - tells us organ needs attention
- Where energy of respective organ collects/gathers
- Mostly on chest/abdomen close to respective organ
“4 Seas”:
- Food, water, grain
- Qi
- Blood
- Marrow
Points associated w/ each, shi and xu symptoms
