What is a high alert drug?
A drug that bears a heightened risk of causing significant patient harm when used in error
Examples of high alert drugs
Warfarin, Insulin, Prednisone, Finasteride
What is a hazardous drug?
Drugs considered hazardous have one or more of these characteristics: Carcinogenicity, Teratogenicity (birth defects), Genotoxicity (damages DNA), Reproductive toxicity (affects fertility), organ toxicity at low doses, and similar structure to known hazardous drugs
What is NIOSH?
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health
3 types of hazardous drugs according to NIOSH
- Antineoplastic drugs (Eg. chemotherapy), 2. Non-antineoplastic drugs (meeting hazardous drug criteria), 3. Drugs that pose reproductive risks
Example of hazardous drugs (not specific but categories)
Chemotherapy agents, antivirals, hormones, some bioengineered drugs, immunosuppresants
Specific examples of hazardous drugs
Methotrexate (cytotoxic and teratogenic), Azathioprine (immunosuppressive, cytotoxic), Finasteride (pregnant women should NOT handle), Tacrolimus (immunosuppressant- avoid inhalation or direct skin contact)
