Midterm Review part 2 Flashcards
speciation
occurs when populations of the same species become genetically isolated
Divergence
of species can be a consequence of natural selection, genetic drift, mutation and biased mating
How do populations become genetically isolated from each other?
- different geographic areas
- they use different habitats within the same area
- if one population is polyploid and cannot breed with the other
- There is no universally agreed upon definition of species*
Possible outcomes of species reproducing
- pre and post zygotic isolation
- development of hybrid zones
- speciation by hybridization
- fusion
- one population goes extinct
Divergence occurs as a consequence of:
- natural selection
- genetic drift
- mutation
- biased mating
Species
an evolutionarily independent population or group of populations
Gene flow
homogenizes genetic variation among populations so evolutionary independence starts with lack of gene flow. When gene flow stops speciation begins to occur
The biological species concept
assigns individuals to the same species if they actually or potentially interbreed. No gene flow!
Prezygotic isolation
can’t interbreed
