THE WEST
Two overlapping meanings:
It refers to the cultural and philosophical inheritance of Europe which has been exported through migration and colonialism.
The roots of this inheritance lie in Judeo-Christian religion and the learning of classical Greece and Rome, shaped in the modern period by the ideas and values of liberalism.
IMPERIALISM
The policy of extending the power or rule of the state beyond its boundaries, typically through the establishment of an empire.
Immigration to the US increased steadily
‘Incipient globalization’ came to an end with the outbreak of WW1
Caused a backlash on immigration
THE STATE
The state is a political association that establishes sovereign jurisdiction within defined territorial borders.
POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION
it refers to the growing importance of international organizations. these are organizations that are transitional in that they exert influence not within an international area comprising of several states
FAILED STATE
A state that is unable to perform its key role of ensuring domestic order by monopolizing the use of force within its territory.
Unable to operate as viable political units
-Cambodia

-Rwanda
-Liberia
-Somalia
GOVERNANCE
- A broader term for government
- Still has no settled or agreed definition
- A process
- Includes markets and hierarchies and networks
FOREIGN POLICY
- Lays out courses of action for govt
- The attempts by govt. To influence or manage events outside of the state’s borders
- Involves the establishment of goals and the mean in which to achieve them
NATIONAL INTEREST
This refers to the foreign policy goals and objectives of the state
CULTURAL GLOBALIZATION
- The process whereby information, commodities and images produced in one part of the world enter into a global flow that tends to ‘flatten out’ cultural differences between nations, region and individuals
- Closely linked to economic globalization
CONSUMERISM
A psychological and cultural phenomenon whereby personal happiness is equated with the consumption of material possessions.
INDIVIDUALISM
The belief in the supreme importance of the individual over any social group or collective body.
GLOBAL CIVIL SOCIETY
- Highlights a realm in which transnational non-governmental groups and associations interact
- These groups are typically voluntary and non-profiting, setting them apart from TNCs
POSTMATERIALISM
- The theory that explains the nature of political concerns of levels of economic development
- Places self esteem and self actualization above material or economic needs
- IT assumes that conditions of material scarcity breed egotistical and acquisitive values, meaning that politics is dominated by economic values.
INTERNATIONAL LAW
The law that governs states and other international actors
Two branches:
-Private & Public
-Private: refers to the regulation of international activities carried out by individuals, companies and other non-state actors.
-Public: applies to states, which are viewed as legal ‘persons’
INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION
- An institution w/ formal procedures and a membership comprising three or more states.
- Comprised of rules and regulations regarding things such as trade
