Midterm Review Flashcards
What are the 5 assumptions to ensure accuracy of mark recapture?
- No marks were lost
- All individuals had equal probability of being marked
- No animals were trap-happy or trap-shy
- Animals died and emigrated at the same rate
- There were no births or immigration
Define growth increment
The change in population size between two points in time
What does E^x equal?
Average number of years of life remaining for an individual age x
What can coexistence result in?
- Stable equilibrium
- Unstable equilibrium
What is density dependence?
Growth rate of a population declines as a population grows
Define self thinning.
Intraspecific competition for limited resources
Define ecology.
The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment
Id of a clumped distribution =
> 1
Id of a regular distribution=
1>
Id of a random distribution =
1 =
Ecological density vs crude density
Ecological density is the number of individuals over the viable area, crude density is density with no regard for variation in habitat.
What are the known features of quadrat sampling?
- Quadrat size is known
- Organisms is immobile during time of sampling
Define population
Group of individuals who can interbreed at a certain place and time
What is the Geometric growth model?
Abundant resources, discrete generations
What is the Logistic growth model?
Limited resources, overlapping generations
What is the Exponential growth model?
Abundant resources, overlapping generations
Define the types of survivorships:
Type I=
Type II=
Type III=
- Juveniles have highest mortality rate (i.e. fish)
- Equal chance of survival or mortality at every stage of life (i.e. birds)
- Mortality occurs later in life (i.e. humans)
If N < K then what is the population doing?
The population is increasing
If N > K then what is the population doing?
The population is decreasing
If N = K then what is the population doing?
The population is stable
Indirect vs direct competition
Indirect competition is when individuals exploit the same resource pool, direct competition is when two individuals physically touch (i..e fighting)
What is commensalism?
When one benefits and one is neutral
What is amensalism?
When one is negatively impacted and the other is neutral
What is Exploitation?
When one is negatively impacted and the other is benefitting
