midterm definitions Flashcards
what is a point?
a point indicates a location, it has no dimension and is represented by a dot.
what is a line?
-a line is represented by a straight path
-that extends indefinitely in two directions -and has no thickness or width
-it has no starting or ending point
what is a line segment?
a line segment is a part of a line that is measurable and has a starting and ending point.
what is a ray?
a ray is a part of a line that has a starting point and no ending point.
what is a plane?
a plane is represented by a flat surface that extends without end in two dimensions made up of points and lines
what are collinear points?
collinear points are point that lie on the same line.
what are coplanar points?
coplanar points are points that lie on the same plane.
all coplanar lines intersect at one point (true or false)
true
coplanar lines NEVER intersect (true/false)
false
what are parallel lines?
parallel lines are lines that never intersect
what are perpendicular lines?
perpendicular lines are lines that intersect at a right angle.
what are intersecting lines?
intersecting lines are lines that intersect at one point in the same plane.
what are skew lines?
skew lines are lines that do not intersect and are non-coplanar.
what is an angle?
an angle is two rays with a common endpoint.
what is a vertex?
the common endpoint of the two rays.
what is an acute angle?
an angle that is less than 90 degrees
what is a right angle?
an angle that is exactly 90 degrees
what is a obtuse angle?
an angle that is more than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees.
what is a straight angle?
an angle that is exactly 180 degrees.
what is a reflex angle?
an angle that is more than 180 degrees and is less than 360 degrees.
what is a full rotation?
an angle that is exactly 360 degrees
what is an adjacent angle?
an adjacent angle is two angles that share the same vertex and one common ray.
what is a vertical angle?
two angles that are congruent and directly across from each other.
what is a supplementary angle?
angles that when added equal to 180 degrees, they are usually part of a straight angle.
what is a complementary angle?
angles that when added equal to 90 degrees, they are usually part of a right angle.
what is a transversal?
a transversal is a line that crosses parallel lines to create pairs of congruent and supplementary angles.
what does congruent mean?
congruent means having the same measurement.
what are corresponding angles?
angles that lie on the same side of the transversal and on the same side of the parallel line, these angles are in the same corner and are congruent.
what are alternate interior angles?
angles on opposite sides of the transversal and inside the two parallel lines, these angles are congruent.
what are alternate exterior angles?
angles on opposite sides of the transversal and outside the two parallel lines, these angles are congruent.
what are same-side interior angles?
angles on the same side of the transversal and inside the parallel lines, these angles are supplementary.
