The USA PATRIOT Act
Passed in the wake of “9/11” to strengthen ability to
conduct investigations into domestic and international
terrorism as they affect U.S. National Security. The PATRIOT ACT enhanced the ability for agencies,
particularly the FBI, to conduct terrorism
investigations, especially involving foreign subjects or
non “US Persons”.
Homeland Security Act of 2002
Created the
Department of Homeland Security. DHS was in charge of; Protecting the US from further terrorist attacks; Reducing the nation’s vulnerability to terrorism; Minimizing damage from potential terrorist attacks & natural
disasters.
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)
Was enacted in the 1970s after the Church
Commission investigated abuses by the CIA, NSA,
and FBI in domestic security investigations. It prohibited intelligence gathered in National Security
Investigations to be shared with agencies
conducting criminal investigations.
Posse Comitatus
It was enacted to prevent the Army from
being abused by having its soldiers pressed into service
as police officers (a posse) by local law enforcement
officials in the post-Reconstruction South.
National Security Act of 1947
Created the Defense
Department, the National Security Council, and the CIA.
Stafford Act (1988)
t provides guidance and structure for an
orderly & continuing means of assistance by the Federal
Government to State & Local governments in carrying out
their responsibilities to alleviate the suffering and
damage which result from disasters.
Emergency Planning and
Community Right to Know (RTK) Act
The RTK Act required each state to partition themselves into
planning sections, such as a county, each with a LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committees).
Weapons of Mass Destruction Act (WMD) Act
Provides essential authority to address
domestic vulnerabilities.
Resulted primarily in greater
funding for training and for equipment
acquisition for first responders.
