midterm Flashcards
Name the three “Elements or Pillars” of Title (or motion) design
3D, Camera/Footage, Animation
What are two of the considerations we must take when making a title sequence?
All Names must be represented equally. It must introduce you to the world of the show/film - It must live in the world of the show/film.
What title sequence was the one we often use as the “origin” of the modern sequence.

What do we mean by “Curated Thinking.”
Using Pinterest as an example. The constant collecting and categorizing of visual input/references for further reflection.
What is “Arcs” in the 12 Principles
Everything in nature follows a circular or arcing path. Also called a parabolic path. If something moves in nature it typically moves in an Arc. Also called a parabolic trajectory.
What is “Squash and Stretch” in the 12 Principles
Gives the illusion of volume and weight. Accelerating objects stretch, objects acting upon a force (to stop) will often squash. Objects keep their Volume and Mass.
What is “Anticipation” in the 12 Principles
A small action that compliments the primary action but does not distract from it. Is any animation that completes or compliments the primary action without taking over. Typically an additional component to the element being animated. Think a person walking(primary) with a swinging bag (secondary).
What is “Appeal” in the 12 Principles
Aesthetic. Charisma. It’s important to note that appeal does not necessarily mean “good.” Actions can also have appeal.
What is “Solid Drawing” in the 12 Principles
3D dimensions. Objects maintain their proportions. When we draw something and make sure it maintains its proportions.
What is “Timing” in the 12 Principles
How long an action takes. Setting of Keyframes on the timeline and modifying them via the graph editor. In AE we use the placement of keyframes and the curve editor to adjust when things start and stop and how quickly they do so. Also, timing maintains the illusion of mass.
What is “Staging”
Presentation of an idea so it is clear.
What is “Straight Ahead and Pose to Pose”
We draw an action frame to frame in a linear order. - Charts an action across its movement with key drawings (key frames).
What is “Follow Through & Overlapping”
The movements that continue after a primary action is complete. Inertia. Follow Thru: Completion of a main action with forces like inertia taking into account. Nothing stops all at once. Overlapping: Nothing stops all at once, these are the remaining “dampening” actions / animations that complete the follow through.
What is “Exaggeration”
Staying true to reality but presenting it in a wilder fashion. If someone yells their mouth gets much larger than it actually would - exaggeration often conveys emotional / mental impact as much as it does physical.
What is “Ease-In / Ease-Out”
When objects are slower to accelerate or decelerate during an animation from the current keyframe and/or to the next keyframe. More drawings means it travels slower, less means faster. In AE we use the Graph Editor/ Curve Editor.
