- Rules are same for everyone
- Ensure sports are somewhat level
- Checks and balances; everything must be negotiated between the two parties
- Saves time; same contract for everyone
What is Title IX?
Established in 1972 to prohibit gender discrimination in educational institutions
What is the importance of Title IX?
- large impact on athletics at high school and college levels
- increased # of jobs in sports today
What is Title IX’s 3-prong test?
To be compliant, institution must meet at least one of the following requirements:
- Demonstrates % of female athletes is nearly the same as % of female undergrads
- Demonstrate athletic opportunity for women is steadily increasing
- Prove that the institution is meeting the athletic interests and abilities of its female athletes (MU meets this criteria)
What is management by objectives (MBO)?
- Popular planning/decision-making aid managers use to convert organizational objectives into group and individual objectives
- managers must manage individuals, not groups, and should learn to know their employees so well that they can align each employee’s goals and objectives with those of the department and the organization as a whole
Why is MBO ideal for application in sport management?
- the relatively small numbers of employees usually involved in most organizations
- qualitative and quantitative criteria used as a measure of performance
