A free concert in 1969, sometimes referred to as “Woodstock West”. The concert ended prematurely due to violence caused by the Hell’s Angels, who were employed as security guards.

An American disc jockey who became known for promoting blues, country, and R&B.
Blue Note
A type of note often added to a pentatonic scale in blues music that is used to add emotion

Bridge
A part of a song that is used to lead from one section to another (ex. chrous to solo section)
ASCAP
A performing rights organization. Short for “American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers”.

The Maraca player on many early Chess Records recordings.
Distortion
A tonal guitar effect that gives it a gritty/edgy sound
Walking Bass
A bass line that plays up and down a scale. Often used in jazz music.
Backwards Tracks (Backmasking)
HIdden messages that can be found in recordings when played backwards.
Slapback Echo
A delay effect that was used on many lead vocal sections in 1950s rock and roll records.
The Merry Pranksters
A group of people who formed around Ken Kesey and tested psychedelic drugs.
Ronnie Spector
Lead singer of the pop/rock girl group “The Ronettes”.
Reverb
A studio effect that is added to an instrument to give it tonal depth.
Steve Allen Show
A variety show in the the 1950s and 60s that presented a “high class” Elvis Presley singing “Hound Dog” in a crooning style to a dog.

A music composition tool in which one section or voice plays a part that in echoed in the same or similar manner to the first part.

A musical rhyhtm that accentuates certain beats to make the song feel like it is shuffling. It is often used in swing music.
