Culture
Learned set of shared interpretations about beliefs, values, and norms, which affect the behaviors of a large group of people.

Created with fairness, balance, and objectivity
Fault lines
Cultures or social groups, can create division. Race/Ethnicity, Gender, Generation, Class, Geography
Habits of thought
common ways of mental processing. Include: mental framework and cognitive biases
Cognitive bias
distortions in human thinking that can occur automatically, and involuntary
Cognitive errors
mistakes in thinking, deviations from a “normal” thinking process
Mental frameworks
the perspective from which a person views the world and his or her viewpoint on what is normal or accepted.
Metacognition
thinking about the way we think. Example from Overcoming Bias: when Connor Boals was going to interview an elderly couple he had to evaluate his initial thinking regarding elderly people.
Media bias
intentional or purposeful slanting of the news
Reflective practice
identify and evaluate automatic perceptions and judgements. Also means to evaluate and change one’s previous works.
Experiential Learning
learning by doing instead of studying
Schema
a category of knowledge that helps people interpret and understand the world. Example: lacrosse players at Duke rape case, schema regarding job interview hand to mouth
Self fulfilling prophecy
tendency for peoples expectations to elicit behavior that is consistent with expectations. Journalists treatment of a source can foster a certain anticipated behavior
Biases from professional norms
bias toward conflict, new/shocking, lead characters/villains, beginning/middle/end, first published
Meritocracy
the idea that success and material possessions result from hard work and initiative within a largely fair and just society
