A message that signals agreement about who is in control

Judging a person based on the characteristics of a group to which the person belongs without regard to how the person may vary from the group characteristic

The perception we have of our skills abilities knowledge competencies and personality traits
Uncertainty reduction
Communication theory that explains how individuals monitor their social environment to know more about themselves and others
Self perception
The overall view we have of ourselves which includes both our self concept and self esteem
Discrimination
Acting differently toward a person based on prejudice
Self fufilling prophecy
An accurate perception of a scale characteristic or situation that leads to behaviors that perpetuate that false perception as true
Stereotype
Exaggerated or oversimplifies generalization used to describe a group
Improving our perception of others
1) question the accuracy of your perceptions
2) Chose to use conscious processing as you get to know people
3) seek more information to verify perceptions
4) realize that your perception of a person will change over time
5) Seek clarification respectfully by perception checking
