What is pastoral theology?
- The part of practical theology that deals with the office and functions of a pastor
- theology because it flows from revelation of God
- Pastoral because deals with those consequences of God’s self-disclosure that pertain to duties, character, role of pastor
- theoretical because it seeks to develop a consistent theory of ministry
- practical because concerned with practical implementation of concrete tasks
Divisions of theology
- Biblical: lets bible speak to us directly about God, His work, His plan
- Historical: Study of God thru His dealings with people
- Systematic: helpful arrangement of above
- Practical: applies theology to life
Characteristics of Pastoral Theology
- Based solidly in scripture
- Considers “shepherd’ - controlling metaphor
- It helps pastors to think deeply & biblically about their identity & calling
- It guides pastors in the practical tasks demanded by their role
- It interacts with and is informed by other theological disciplines

- Can I be loyal to those over me?
- How can I find out if I really have what it takes?
