Midterm 2: Clinical Motility Tests Flashcards
Advantages of King-Devick Saccadic Test
The test can stop at certain points for patients who can’t finish the whole test. This is because each section is timed differently.
Used in sports vision to evaluate return-to-play status after injury
- Easily administered on sidelines by trainers
- Compare results to established baseline score for each player
Disadvantages of King-Device Saccadic Test
- No adjustment is made for patients with language-based disorders/non-native English speakers (i.e., no assessment of RAN
- No adjustment is made for errors
- Athletes can “sandbag” baseline testing to appear as though their score is not impacted following potential concussive injury
Advantages of Developmental Eye Movement Test (DEM)
Vertical subtest allows assessment of RAN: rapid automatic naming
Allows differentiation between language-based and saccadic dysfunctions
Disadvantages of Developmental Eye Movement Test (DEM)
Time-consuming
Difficult for some patients to complete / no early exit points which makes it harder for people who have attention issues or age/ younger people
Debate as to whether vertical component truly assesses RAN
Advantages of Groffman Visual Tracing Test
Easy to administer
Taps into competitive spirit, especially for athletes
Having two equally validated test cards allows for re-administration with potential lenses at the same visit
Disadvantages of Groffman Visual Tracing Test
Difficult to perform—some patients refuse/give up easily
Said to be a pursuit test, but is it?
Process of elimination can give patients the last answer
Advantages of RightEye Vision System
Precise measurements are possible
Detailed assessment of fixations, saccades, and pursuits in one test
Useful for therapy, ABI/TBI
Can track progress and show patients
