What is world view?

How did the Aymara people use play on the bus?
Culture would normally only joke with individuals they were familiar with. However, there’s an exception to this when they’re on the bus, as they use “joking” as a way to ease tension in a cramped bus environment

- Ideal for getting past censorship
- Can shock or surprise into new social awareness
- Serve as a “safety valve” allowing for release of tensions without disturbing existing systems of power and inequality

Malinowski: Myths can counter challenges to social order or change when social arrangements altered
- flexible and creative
- make up myths to adapt to future
Levi-Strauss: Myths provide imaginary solution to social contradictions that in real life can’t be resolved/overcome

What is a ritual?
- repetitive social practice
- set off from everyday life
- involves ordered sequence of activities
- linked to and designed to represent and reinforce specific sets of ideas, values, beliefs, important to a culture

a rite of passage is a ritual that moves people from one position in the social structure to another
- Separation: leave behind symbols and practices of previous position
- Transition: between states. Phase that lets you accept new role. Initial stage of a process
- Re-aggregation: Ritual passenger reintroduced to society in new position
