“emptiness”
Explained as the middle way between existence and non-existence. all things are empty. emptiness is perfecting wisdom which is required for a bodhisattva to attain buddhahood. : The belief that all things are devoid of an intrinsic value. The meaning we give to an object is derived from our perception of said object.
Upaya
“skillful means”
The strategy used in Mahayana Buddhism to help people reach enlightenment. A form of deceit for a ‘good cause’. Shown w/ the three vehicles, which the Buddha reveals there is only one vehicle to enlightenment. the Buddha uses Upaya to save people under the impression there are more choices than there truly is.
Bodhicitta
“mind of the enlightenment,”
Bodhicitta is the aspiration to reach enlightenment. This includes the goal to achieve Buddhahood in order to be liberated from suffering. The creation of bodhicitta is what makes a person a bodhisattva.
Dharmakaya
“true body”
it’s the symbolic sense and one of the three bodies. The nature of the Buddha and the source from which his various other forms derived. Contains Buddha’s qualities.
Ekayana
“one vehicle”
the three vehicles are actually just one vehicle along the path to enlightenment, where the end goal is buddhahood and all teachings will ultimately lead to buddhahood.primary belief in mahayana buddhism.
Yogacara
“one who practices yoga/meditation”
Buddhist school that believes the world is a creation of the mind, everything is “mind only”. Everyone has their own consciousness while the world around us is a projection. (external world does not exist.)
Sumedha
A past bodhisattva
A Yogi who laid his hair on the ground to cover a mud puddle for Buddha Dipankara . He took a vow to wait and be reborn a bunch of times as a bodhisattva rather than become an arhat.
