Midterm Flashcards
What are two ways that flatworms and roundworms differ in body structure?
They are different in shape and have different digestive systems.
What are the 3 main types of worms?
Flatworms, roundworms, segmented worms
Why are some kinds of tapeworms dangerous to dogs?
Some tapeworms attack dog’s digestive systems.
What supports the body of most sponges?
A network of spikes.
What is budding?
Budding is how sponges reproduce asexually.
Do sponges have separate sexes?
Yes.
What are Cnidarians?
Water dwelling invertebrates.
What are the two types of Cnidarians?
Polyps and Medusas.
Examples of Chelicerata
Ticks, mites, spiders, and scorpions.
Examples of Crustacea
Barnacles, Crabs, Crayfish, lobsters, and shrimp.
Examples of Hexapoda
Insects.
Examples of Myriapoda
Centipedes and Millipedes
Arachnida
Class includes spiders, ticks, mites, and scorpions.
What are Chelicerata?
A sub phylum of arthropod that have pincer like mouthparts.
Chilopoda
Class Which includes centipedes.
Decapoda
Order which includes crabs, crayfish, shrimp and lobsters. All are ten footed.
Diplopoda
Class which includes millipedes
Merostomata
Class which includes Horeshoe crabs
Appendages
An external body part that protrudes from an organisms body.
Exoskeleton
The strong but flexible covering of an arthropod.
Gills
Crustaceans, aquatic insects, and aquatic insect larvae breath with this organ.
Spiracles
Opening to the trachea which open and close using valves, allows air to enter the trachea.
Cuticle hairs
Short bristles which provide the input for an arthropods sense of touch.
Ecdysis
The periodic shedding of the exoskeleton.
External fertilization
A type of fertilization in which a male’s sperm fertilizes a female’s egg outside of the female’s body. Aquatic arthropods use this type of fertilization.
Internal fertilization
A type of fertilization in which a male’s sperm fertilizes a female’s egg inside of the female’s body. terrestrial arthropods use this type of fertilization.
Larva
The wingless, worm like stage of an arthropod during complete metamorphosis.
Nymph
An immature form of an insect.
What type of symmetry do arthropods have?
Bilateral symmetry.
What does the word “arthropod” mean?
Jointed foot.
What does the word “myriapod’’ mean?
many feet.
What type of circulatory system do arthropods have?
Arthropods have open circulatory systems.
Ninety percent of all insects undergo this type of metamorphosis.
Complete metamorphosis.
Arachnids must ingest what type of food?
Arachnids must ingest liquid food.
Mites and ticks have how many body segments?
Mites and ticks have two body segments.
How many pairs of antennae do crustaceans have?
Crustaceans have two pairs of antennae.
How many pairs of antennae do insects have?
Insects have one pair of antennae.
Entomology
The study of insects.
What are the three main body segments of arthropods?
The thorax, abdomen, and head.
What are tube feet used for?
To move and eat.
Are echinoderms invertebrates that live on the ocean bottom?
Yes.
Is the water vascular system connected to the tube feet of echinoderms?
Yes.
What is a bivalve?
A mollusk with two shells.
Where are the wings of an insect attached?
The thorax.
What system are tube feet a part of?
The water vascular system.
What type of symmetry do echinoderms have?
Radial symmetry.
Are the cells of most organisms organized into higher levels of structure?
Yes.
What do corals spend their adult lives as?
Polyps.
A network of what support the body of most sponges?
Spikes.
Adaptation
A characteristic that helps organisms perform basic functions in their environment.
How many openings are there in the digestive tract of roundworms?
Two.
