Midterm Flashcards
What is Chiropractic?
A philosophy science, and art of things natural; a system of adjusting the segments of the spinal column by hand only, for the correction of the cause of dis-ease
What does ‘things natural’ refer to?
Excluding any intervention of a supernatural or divine character. Used to distinguish Chiropractic from religion or any healing or a miraculous kind
What is meant by ‘by hand only’?
Meant to separate chiropractic from the practice of surgery. Not meant to exclude instrument adjusting
Disease
A disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or pant, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or that affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury
Dis-ease
A lack of ease or coordination specifically caused by a vertebral subluxation
______- veterbral subluxations cause dis-ease. They are also the _______ cause of dis-ease
All; only
What are the three pillars of chiropractic?
Science, philosophy, art
A definition for the profession is important for what two reasons?
Legal and clinical
Chiropractic Philosophy
The point of reference from where you view the processes of health and incoordination within the human body. This is the foundation of thought and clinical consideration, the lens through which you view those processes of life
Philosophy of Medicine
Views data gathered through a medial lens, then try to achieve normal - usually through drugs
Sublata Causa Tollitur Effectus
The effect will leave when the cause is removed
ADIO
The chiropractic way, the body strives to maintain coordination from the brain to the spinal cord. Above down inside out
OIBU
The medical view, the diseases are to be combated from outside the body to return to normal. Cure to disease is the focus. Outside in below up.
What does ADIO represent?
Above - brain
Down - spinal cord
Inside - nerves
Out - end organ / tissue
Chiropractic Lexicon / Culture
Cultures are dependent on customs, views, and especially language to define them as being separate and distinct from other cultures
Chiropractic Solidarity
In an age when health is a vitally important socioeconomic topic it is imperative that chiropractors not succumb to outside pressures to subjugate ourselves by discarding our lexicon and along with it our cultural authority. If this were to happen our uniqueness and therefore our leagal purpose for the profession would be gone
What is DD’s biggest question when concerning health and disease?
Why?
19th Century Health Care
Doctors were scarce with many competing theories. Most healthcare was family provided
19th Century Hospitals
Seen as a place for the the terminally ill to go and die. Heroic medicine was the most common type - alcohol, mercury, toxins and bloodletting
How did Washington die?
Bloodletting
Andrew Taylor Still
The founder of osteopathy. At the time - use of non-specific manipulation to enhance the flow of blood
DD Palmer Birthday
March 7, 1845
DD Palmer Hometown
Port Perry, east of Toronto
Why did DD leave Canada?
The civil war and financials in Canada. Walked across the border with a carpet bag with his brother Thomas
Spirtualism
DD was very interested in spiritualism and magnetic healing
DD opened a _________ _________ practice for several months in 1886
Magnetic healing
DD advertised himself as? (for magnetic healing)
Dr. DD Palmer, vital magnetic healing process
What did Bart’s letter say?
- Do not be deceived by women
- The less you talk the more you will accomplish
- You did not come here for your health or glory alone, it won’t feed you
Where was the magnetic healing practice?
Davenport Iowa, the fourth floor of the Ryan Building
How did DD practice magnetic healing?
Focused on the affected organ, palpated the tender spot, and charged up his own energy and broke up the congestion
When was the first Chirpractic Adjustment?
September 18, 1895
Who was the first Chiropractic Patient?
William Harvey Lillard
What did the first adjustment cure?
William’s deafness. We become deaf in an stopping position and felt something go in his back. DD racked the vertebrae by using the spinous process as a lever and his hearing was restored
What is the Nosebreaker?
The first adjustment was performed on the ‘nosebreaker’ bench. It had no nose hole or padding to accommodate the patient’s face
What was the second treated disease with chriopractic?
Heart trouble, vertebra were adjusted in the region of heart innervation and the case of heart trouble was resolved
DD Palmer’s Chiropractic Paradigm
The body is a self regulating and self-healing system run by intelligent life energy traveling through the nervous system. If the spine is mechanically malfunctioning, the resultant change created abnormal function in the body
___% of all dis-ease was attributed to subluxation in the spinal column
95%
Subluxation of joints effects?
The neural tension and effects the tone of the end-organs served by the nerves. Nerves too tense or too slack is the cause of disease
Tense taut nerves
Brought too many vibrational signals to end-organs, causing inflammation
Nerves that were slacked
Brought too few impulses to the tissues of the body, and thereby caused cold, hard tumors
Life is the expression of _______
Tone
Tone
The foundation upon which DD built the science, reasoned out philosophy and created the art of adjusting luxated vertebrae
Samuel Weed
Helped come up with the term chiropractic
Chirism
Healing by hand
The beginning of Chiropractic Education
DD was reluctant at first the share his discovery. He did not want patients to see what he was doing and practiced in secret
What made DD want to teach?
A near death car accident
LeRoy Baker
The first chiropractic student, he did not graduate
William Seeley
First full fledged student and first graduate of Palmer School or Chiropractic
A.P Davis
Second chiropractic student. Also was an MD and an osteopath
5 of the first 15 graduates were also?
Mds or DOs
Who is the developer of chiropractic?
B.J. Palmer
