A

Responsibility

  • Reliability and dependability
  • Ability to distinguish between right and wrong
  • A duty to perform actions adequately and thoughtfully
  • E.g., When a nurse is administering a medication, she is responsible for assessing the patient’s need for the drug, for administering it safely and correctly and for evaluating the patient’s response to it

Accountability

  • Being able to accept responsibility or account for one’s actions
  • Answerability: Being able to offer reasons and explanations to other people for aspects of nursing practice
  • E.g., You know that a patient who will be discharged soon is confused about how to self-administer insulin. The patient, institution and society rely on your judgement and trust you to take action in response to this situation

Advocacy

  • Acting on behalf of another person, speaking for persons who cannot speak for themselves, or intervening to ensure that views are heard
  • Informed consent: Nurses advocate on behalf of patients to make sure that the patient understands the treatment and has the capacity to give their consent for the treatment
  • Protection of patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality
  • E.g., Intervening if other members of the health care team fail to respect the patient’s privacy; following policies that protect the patient’s privacy
