narrative
a specific telling of a story (in our case it is a film)
high angle shot
the position of the frame in relation to the subject of the frame. the camera is high, meaning the subject is lower.
audiovisual contract
synthesis, forging of an immediate and necessary relationship between something one sees and something one hears at the same time. Forced marriage and audiovisual contract
sync-point
mise-en-bande
(set in the tape)
the integrated soundtrack. all the elements of the soundtrack set in place in the recording as a whole, like a complex composition
theme
a complete melodic or harmonic idea that recurs throughout a film
digetic sound
any voice, musical passage, or sound effect presented as originating from a source within the story world
non-diegetic sound
sound that does not originate from a source within the story world
homophonic
one melodic line with harmonic material that supports the melodic line
low key lighting
strong contrast between light and dark areas of the shot=deep shadows
texture
the thickness or thinness of a musical passage as well as the melodic and harmonic configuration
motif
a short melodic fragment, rhythm, or harmony that recurs throughout a film
mise-en-scene
all the elements placed in front of the camera to be photographed: setting, props, lighting, costumes, and makeup, and actors.
sound effect
a sound other than speech or music
soundtrack
the recorded sounds that are designed to accompany a film. they include dialogue, music, sound effects, ambient sound, silence
