what is the protagonist?
a protagonist is the main character and their characteristics. The hero of the story. This is usually the character who readers like the most and follow throughout the narrative
what is the antagonist?
the opposing force or character that creates conflict. creates conflict and obstacles for the main character to overcome.
what are the supporting characters?
they are like sidekicks or helpers to the main character. they make the story colorful, support or challenge, show more about the main character, keep the story going.
what are foil characters?
A foil character is like a mirror that makes the main character look different. they highlight differences, contrast personalities and emphasize traits.
Basically a foil character makes the main characters characteristics shine by being their opposite.
what is a round character?
round characters is like a fully developed person, they have many sides, feel real and change or grow.
basically, they are like a real complex person in the story, not just a one dimensional figure.
what is a conflict?
conflict is the struggle between opposing forces in a story.
what is an internal conflict?
struggles within a character’s mind or emotions
define character vs self:
character vs self is an internal conflict, this is when a character is struggling because of her/himself.
what is an external conflict?
obstacles or challenges that characters face that are beyond their control
define character vs character:
character vs character is a type of external conflict, this is when a character is struggling because of another character’s direct actions.
define character vs nature:
character vs nature is a kind of external conflict, this is when a character faces problems because of a natural force.
define character vs society
character vs society is a kind of external conflict, this is when a character faces problems because they go against the laws of the government or of society.
what is the setting of a story?
the setting is the time and place in which a story takes place in.
what are the 2 categories that setting falls into? (define them as well)
1) time: identifies the specific time period or era in which the story is set.
2)place: describes the physical location or environment where the story unfolds.
what is the plot?
the plot refers to the sequence of event that make up the story
what is the exposition in a plot?
introduces the characters, setting and background information.
what is the rising action in a plot?
presents the events that build tension and lead to the climax.
what is the climax in a plot?
highlights the turning point or most intense moment of the story.
what is the falling action in a plot?
shows how the story begins to resolve conflicts and move towards the conclusion.
what is the resolution in a plot?
explains how loose end are tied up and the story reaches a satisfying end.
what is point of view?
point of view is the perspective from which the story is told.
what are the 4 types of point of view?
1) first person
2)second person
3)third person limited
4)third person omniscient
why is point of view important?
it tells the readers who is telling the story and the relationship that the narrator has to the characters in the story.
what is first person POV?
when the narrator is a part of the story(a character), often uses I or we.
Ex: I went to the bookstore
what is second person POV?
is when the narrator talks directly to “you”, its like someone is speaking to you and telling you what to do or how to feel. usually used for instructions and recipes, often used you, yours,yourself
Ex: you should go to the bookstore
what is third person limited POV?
when the narrator tells the story from the perspective of one character, we only see what that character thinks and feels, and we don’t know everything about the other characters.
Ex: Konnor was excited to go to the bookstore.
