Midterm Flashcards
What are the 7 characteristics of life?
Display order, harness and utilize energy, reproduce, respond to stimuli, exhibit homeostasis, grow and develop, evolve
How did Darwin study evolution?
By natural selection
What is the plasma membrane made of and how can substances get through it?
It is a bilayer made of lipids and embedded with protein molecules, it is hydrophobic and only some substances can get through by protein channels
What does the cytoplasm do?
contains the cytosol and cytoskeleton which holds cell shape and helps with cell division
What are the 2 types of prokaryotes?
bacteria and archea
What are the four shapes of prokaryotic cells?
cocci, bacilli, spirilla, square cells
What are the common features of bacteria and archaea?
DNA, ribosomes, cell wall, pili, flagella
What does the plasma membrane do in prokaryotic cells?
Contains molecules that metabolizes food molecules or light energy into the chemical energy of ATP
What is a capsule and what does it do?
A layer of polysaccharides surrounding the cell wall that protect bacteria from extreme temp, antibiotics, viruses and antibodies
What is the pili made of and what does it do?
Made of proteins and attaches bacterial cells to other cells or eukaryotes as infection
Whats a prokaryotic chromosome?
clump of dna packaged into nucleoid, no nucleus
What does the cytoplasm do in Eukaryotes?
Contains membrane organelles that are used for energy metabolism, molecular synthesis, storage, and transport
whats a plasmid?
small circles of DNA that replicate independently and provide bacteria with genetic advantages ex. Antibiotic resistance
