Frame Story
a story within a story; outside frame joins all inside stories together
Plot
events of the story that provide meaning and interest to the reader
Conflict
struggle between a character and another person, nature, circumstances, or even him or herself
parallelism
the use of similar grammatical forms or sentence structures to express ideas that are related or of equal importance
Antithesis
parllel constructtions bring ideas together in a way that suggests they are opposites
Metaphor
comparing two thingsby making them equal
simile
comparison using “like” or “as”
Personification
giving human qualties to a non-human thing
Theme
Central message of text
Tone
writers attitude about the subject
Exposition
background info about settings and character
Rising Action
all the plot points that build suspense, create conflict, etc
climax
turning point in the plot; often a moment of decision for a major character
Falling Action
after the climax, wraps up the plot
Resolution
Problem of the story is resolved; story ends
