Midterm Flashcards

1
Q

What place should be given to the doctrine of man compared to the doctrine of God?

A

God is the Creator, we are the creature

Man is not the pinnacle or center of the theological system; we start with God

Our doctrine of man is important, but it comes out of and is ultimately subservient to our doctrine of God

We are above beast, but our sin humiliates us and lays us down in the dust

Do Genesis 1 and 2 present contradictory accounts of man’s origins?

A

No, chapter 1 was God’s general creation, chapter 2 addresses God’s special creation in far greater detail

Q

Was death and fallenness part of man originally?

A

No, it was imparted to him at the Fall. At first, man was able to sin or not sin. After the fall, man is not able to not sin. Upon regeneration, man is once again able to sin or not sin. In glory, man will not be able to sin

Q

Does the Bible leave room for evolution from apes?

A

No; the passage testified that man was moulded out of the dust and that God breathed into him, unlike the other creatures. To deny man’s creation as recounted in Genesis 1-2 is to deny that man is made in the image of God.

Q

Is there a distinction between image and likeness?

A

Iranaeus believed so, but there is no evidence; it is Hebrew parallelism, not a different meaning

Q

Different views on the image of God

A

Intellect (rational soul separates man from beast)

Body (this can become heretical if one believes that God has a body that we’re modelled after)

Dominion (lies in man’s duty, which involves mind, body, soul)

Relationality (communion and fellowship with other humans, particularly in marriage)

Original Righteousness (holiness)

Did man lose the image of God?

A

16
Q

What is trichotomy?

A

The belief that man is body, soul, and spirit

17
Q

What is Creationism (with respect to the soul)?

A

For each conceived human being, God creates a soul and unites it to the body of that person

18
Q

What is Traducianism?

A

In this paradigm, the souls of the parents create the soul of the child through the same procreative activity that the body is produced

19
Q

What is Pre-Existence?

A

God creates souls and then they are given bodies at a later time (backed up more by philosophy than by Scripture, makes the body accidental and of little value)

20
Q

What is the Covenant of Works?

A

God’s covenant with Adam

Adam would receive eternal life so long as he obeyed the covenant stipulations; if Adam broke covenant, he would fall under the curse of death; salvation was secured or lost according to his works

21
Q

What is the distinction between the Covenant of Works and the Covenant of Grace?

A

It would require man perfect obedience to uphold the Covenant of Works and be saved; while we are still saved by works in the Covenant of Grace, it is Christ’s works and not our own; we are saved through the vehicle of faith in Christ

22
Q

What Scripture passages teach the Covenant of Works?

A

Genesis 2:15-17

Hosea 6:7

Romans 5:12-21
