Midterm 1 Unit 2 Flashcards
How are epithelial cells held together?
Adhesion molecules and tight junction proteins
What replaces the epithelial cells?
Underlying stem cells that proliferate and differentiate
What is the morphology of the epithelial cells?
Polarized morphology
What does the skin fulfill of fish?
The skin fulfills the ability to thermoregulate, osmoregulate, synthesize nutrients (like vitamin D), and act as a protective barrier from chemicals, UV radiation,
microbes and skin abrasion.
What type of scales does the cartilaginous fish have?
cartilaginous fish have placoid scales which go through the mucus coated epidermis
What are the scales like of the bony fish?
The scales of the bony fish are below the mucus-coated epidermis layer.
What two things does the bony fish have?
The bony fish have goblet cells and they have melanophores.
In bony fish what are the roles have the goblet cells
the goblet cells are secreting mucus and antimicrobial proteins and peptides.
What are the melanophores of the bony fish?
The melanophores of the bony fish are responsible for the pigmentation of the fish and sequestering reactive oxygen species that generate via oxidative stress and neural sensory cells that are on the lateral line.
What do birds have in replace of the sweat glands and the subcutaneous glands?
Birds have uropygial glands which secrete lipids
What do birds do with the lipids they secrete from the uropygial glands?
The birds use the lipids from the uropygial glands to condition their feathers to be water resistant.
What is the role of feathers and hairs in birds and mammals?
To be used for thermoregulation and to be used as a protective barrier against chemicals and microbes
How can skin influence the immunity to microbes and exposure to pathogens?
The thickness of the stratum corneum (preventing pathogens from getting into the epidermis layer), melanocyte pigmentation (used for oxidative stressand sebaceous glands.
What do sheep secrete instead of oil?
Instead of oils sheep secrete lanolins which create the mucus protective layer over the epidermis and epithelial cells
What is mucus composed of?
mucus is composed of mucin and lipids and coats the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract, GIT and urogenital track
