Essentialism
racism is natural and connected with phenotypical features
Constructivism
Racism is based on racial perceptions of individuals by others, which is a keystone in any system of racial stratification
Racialization/Ethnicization
The act of giving a racial character to someone or something: The process of categorizing, marginalizing, or regarding according to race. It is the process of ascribing ethnic or racial identities to a relationship, social practice, or group that may not identify itself as such
Historical institutionalism
a new institutionalist social science approach that emphasizes how timing, sequences, and path dependence affect institutions and shape social, political, economic behavior and change
Path dependency
a phenomenon whereby history matters; what has occurred in the past persists because of resistance to change. The resistance to change could be based on the financial implications or because policymakers are making cautious or uninformed decisions
Legacies
“a durable casual relationship btw past institutions and policies on subsequent practices or beliefs, long before the life of regimes, institutions, and policies that gave birth to them” Not just things that remain the same, but things that enable certain beliefs/ practices to endure. associated with particular belief that that became imbedded in a historical experience that no longer exists.

A first-hand account of an event or time period and are considered to be authoritative
Secondary Sources
involve analysis, synthesis, interpretation, or evaluation of primary sources. Often attempt to describe or explain primary sources
