Midterm 1 Flashcards
What are the types of leads?
Leads range from 9H (extremely hard) to 9B (extremely soft).
9H, 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, 9B. Harder leads produce lighter, thinner lines while softer leads produce denser, wider lines.
What is 2H lead and what is it used for?
2H lead is a medium-hard lead used for laying out drawings. They do not erase easily if drawn with a heavy hand.
What is H and F lead and what is it used for?
It is used for general-purpose lead suitable for layouts, finished drawings, and hand lettering.
What is HB lead and what is it used for?
It is a softer grade of lead capable of dense line work and hand lettering. HB lines erase and print well but tend to smear easily.
What is line weight, what do you differ them for and how do you control it?
Line weight refers to the darkness and thickness of lines. Different line weights are used for different components of a drawing. It is controlled by the pressure you apply, the sharpness of the lead and the type of lead.
How do you obtain light/thin lines?
Use your hard lead (2H), do not apply as much pressure.
What do you use light/thin lines for?
You use them for construction lines and lettering guide lines.
How do you obtain medium lines?
Use your HB of F lead with lighter pressure.
What are medium lines used for?
Used for hidden objects (indicated with a dashed line).
How do you obtain heavy lines?
Use your HB of F lead and a blunter point.
What are heavy lines and what are they used for?
They are used for visible lines and are the darkest lines and are typically twice as thick as a light lines.
How are center lines drawn?
With 2H lead and long dash, short dash.
How are hidden lines drawn?
With HB/F lead and with a dashed line.
What is 3D projection?
It is a method to map 3D points in a 2D plane.
What are the two key elements of projection of objects?
Line of sight and plane of projection.
What is line of sight?
An imaginary ray of light between an observer’s eye and the object.
What are the two main types of line of sight?
Parallel and perspective.
