Promote norms of sexual activity, have and socialize children, provide financial security, and provide emotional support.
Common-Law Marriage
Couple that passes themselves off as married, but aren’t legally.

Married to two people.
Endogamy
Marrying inside one’s own group.
Exogamy
Marrying outside one’s group.
Family of Orientation
The family that raised you.
Family of Procreation
The family that you create.
Nuclear Family
Includes the husband, wife, and biological or adopted children.
Monogamy
Married to one person.
Polygyny
Married to more than one wife.
Polyandry
Married to more than one husband.
Swinging
Exchanging partners just for sex.
Structural Functionalism
Looks at how parts of society, like the family, perform functions so society survives.
Instrumental Roles
(Husband) earn money, provide shelter, fixing things, making decisions
Expressive Roles
(wives) emotional support, nurture family members
Conflict Theory
Views conflict and outcomes as natural, even good at times.
Feminist Theories
Looks at inequalities in societies gender expectations along with racism and classism.
Ecological Theory
Looks at how we influence and are influenced by our environment.
Microsystem
Relationships that influence our daily lives (parent-child)
Mesosystem
Relationships among different settings (school, religion, etc.)
Exosystem
Settings we don’t experience directly, but that influences us (News/media)
Macrosystem
Things going on in larger society, cultural beliefs (technological changes).
