What is the apocrypha?
Meaning “secret/hidden,” refers to sacred books of Jewish people not included in the Hebrew bible. It helps us know what happened in the gap between the end of the OT and the start of the NT. addressed in DnC 91:1-6; good principles but many interpolations of men
What is Aramaic?
Official language of the Persian empire; Jesus spoke Aramaic (dialect of Semitic) which is similar to Hebrew, the language of the bible.
Who is Josephus?
A Jewish historian and apologist; AD 37-100 writes the history of the Jews; he is a priest; he describes the temple and has 4 surviving works. He writes the first account about Jesus outside the New Testament; describes what others say about Christ; writes also about John the Baptist and Jesus brother James.
What books make up the Torah?
Genesis, exodus, Leviticus, numbers, Deuteronomy
What is a synagogue?
Places of gathering (does not have to be a literal building); included a place for scrolls, a reading desk and seats for the worshipers; worship services included:
- sing psalms
- recite shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) “there is only one God”
- prayers
- read law/prophets
- sermon/teaching passages of scripture
- prayer by ruler of synagogue
Law of Moses
A terrestrial law - lesser law given in wickedness; 613 commandments; the 10 are only the Decalogue; sometimes seen as a law of revenge but is a law of justice
- lex talionus (you can reciprocate sin against you in equal measure)
“The traditions of the elders” were oral laws expanded and added by elders
Sacrifices
When there were believers and priesthood, there was sacrifice; law of sacrifice given in similitude of the son of God. Rules: - it must be your property - you must have gotten it properly - must be without blemish Kinds: Sin offerings Burnt offerings Peace offerings
