Mixed of a physical location with the human element to it.
Ex: the park that you used to swing at

Only the physical location.
Ex: some random park
What is Sense of Place?
Emotional connection to a place (via culture, physical environment etc.).
Ex: The city lights of New York make me feel magic
What is Place-based education?
Teacher takes their student out to a place for educational purposes.
What is Place-based advertising/media?
Media focused on a place.
Ex: The London Press newspaper focuses on local London news
What is Place-based philanthropy?
Doing good for your local community.
Ex: Building a local food bank in London
What is Place-based science?
Conducting science in a local setting.
Ex: How is water pollution affecting London specifically
What is Place-based regional development?
Emphasize the resource of a place.
Ex: You can grow wine anywhere but the conditions in Niagara Falls make it the best

Novels about a place.
Ex: Anne of Green Gables in PEI
What is Cultural tourism?
Visiting a place for the purpose of pleasure via gaining a greater appreciation for the place’s culture.

How real a place feels.
What is Event-based tourism?
Tourism that can happen based on an event that can happen anywhere.
What is Attraction-based tourism?
Tourism based on specific attractions that are based on that location.
What is Dark tourism?
Bad side of history that tourists go to see, hear, listen etc.

Set of qualities that shape sensory and intellectual appreciation of wine.

How different/special a place is.
What is Tangible ambiance/atmosphere?
Physical things that make it feel like a place.
Ex: lamppost makes it feel like Paris
What is Intangible ambiance/atmosphere?
Things that touch on the 5 senses to make a place feel like that place.
Ex: smells of Paris, hearing French being spoken in Vegas

Tourism based on stereotype of a place.
What is Architecture of reassurance?
Emotional reassurance against constant change of reality.
Reassures things will be okay (happy, nice people, wonderland)
What is a Central tourist district?
Spaces that are designed for tourism practices.
Ex: Sightsee
What are Travel guides?
Guiding patterns for visitors to practice when touring a place.
What is Haussmannian architecture?
Style of architecture that represents Paris.
What are Imaginaries?
Feeling of being in a place based on the monuments and ambiance/atmosphere.
Ex: The Eiffel Tower makes it feel like being in Paris (urban ambiance/atmosphere)
What is Duplitecture?
Architectural copies of monuments.
What is an Emblem?
Icon of a territory.
What is the Image of place?
Beliefs people have about a place.
What are Open images?
Place can add more characteristics to it.
Ex: Paris as a place for sushi
What are Closed images?
Place unlikely to add more characteristics to it.
Ex: Paris is only ever croissants
What is Order?
Social conformity.
What is Romanticism?
Privilege but not that privilege.
What is Tourismo ed Economia?
Work that summarized tourism on the Italian economy.

Tourism theorists.
What is Pleasure periphery?
Going outside the big city for a break then coming back.
Ex: Toronto to cottage country
What is Global pleasure periphery?
Giving out of the rich country for a break in the poor countries then coming back.

A model describing the lifecycle of a tourism resort.
What is the Development Stage in the Butler Model?
Discovered resort place; invites new economic opportunity.
What is the Growth and Development Stage in the Butler Model?
Tour comes; resort expands.
What is the Success Stage in the Butler Model?
Mass tourism; locals are mad because their culture is being erased.
What is the Problem – Stagnation Stage in the Butler Model?
Tourists are bored of the resort = economic decline and less resort facilities which means higher unemployment.
What is the Decline or Rejuvenation Stage in the Butler Model?
Decline.
Resort is toasted
Rejuvenation.
