Epos
Monumental, long, solemn poem that focuses on heroic characters and their travails, and often involves gods or demi-gods.
What is the Homeric Question?
Were the Iliad and Odyssey written by Homer, or many writers?

What is oral poetry?
Improvised, unwritten poetry.
What are the features of oral poetry?
Repeating type scenes, verses, half-verses, and stock epithets.
Who discovered the typical features of oral poetry?
Milman Parry (1902-1935) did when he recorded Serbo-Croat singers in Bosnia improvising epics, and his pupil, Albert Lord, refined the theory.
What are the features of epic style?
Similes, decorative epithets, formulaic verses, catalogues, epic retardations etc.
What are decorative epithets?
Adjectives always linked to a person or thing, reflecting a typical characteristic of it.

They are used to describe type scenes.
What are some examples of formulaic verses?
Time of day, dressing in armour before dying, eating, departure, death.
What is catalogue poetry?
They are poetic lists known as catalogue.

Hero’s finest hour (Gr. aristos = best)
What is epic retardation?
When the narrative slows down in order to digress from the main plot. This was used in epics to keep the audience on edge, to add suspense, and lengthen the narrative.
What is ecphrasis?
It’s Greek for “description”, and is the detailed description of people, things (art, buildings), or events, to digress from the narrative.
