Midterm 1 Flashcards
four characteristics of muscles
extensibility, elasticity, excitability, and contractility
extensibility
the ability for the muscle to be stretched
elasticity
the ability of the muscle to return to its normal length after being stretched
excitability
the ability of the muscle to receive a stimulus
contractility
the ability of the muscle to receive a stimulus and contract
tendons
dense, cordlike connective tissue that attach muscle to bone; transmit tension from muscle to muscle and assist in providing movement
ligaments
dense connective tissue that connect bones across joints; stabilize and support the joints by holding bones in place
fascia
a thin membrane that surrounds the bones, muscles, and body organs; helps muscles to change shape and length during movements and allows for muscles to be transmitted without hurting other tissue
fast twitch fibers
individual muscle fibers that contract quickly and fatigue quickly
slow twitch fibers
individual muscle fibers that contract slowly and are slow to fatigue
muscle strength
the maximum amount of force that a muscle or group of muscles can produce during one contraction
muscle endurance
the ability of a muscle or muscle groups to perform repeated contractions for a period of time
neural adaptations
enable an increase in muscle strength and size
deltoids
in your shoulder; helps you move your arms in different directions; dumbbell shoulder press
pectoralis major
chest; adduction or depression of the arm and rotation of the arm; bench press
