Instrumental, Structural, and Ideological
What is Government?
Hierarchically structured, formal institution with authority to govern the state
What is Governance?
Process involving formal and informal actors and institutions in governing
What is “Govern”?
Produce a degree of order and facilitate collective action
What is Multilateralism?
Coordinating relations among 3 or more states in accordance with certain principles
What is International Order?
Regularized patterns of interaction between states
What is International Law?
- Compels states towards certain agreed-upon actions
- Consensual in nature
- Hard and Soft Law
What are International Regimes?
The assemblage of actors, institutions, processes, ideologies and political relations involved in a particular area of global governance.
What is the “Global Political Economy”?
The practice and study of the interconnected and embedded institutions and processes of economics and politics at the global level
Difference between “Global” and “International” relation?
International: Relations between states
Transnational: Processes occurring between and above states and involving other actors (i.e. int’l law, int’l organizations)
Global: Processes between, above and throughout states and involving other actors
Who are the central actors in IR?
States
(Political organization consisting of a population,
territory, gov’t, and sovereignty (Sovereignty is the rightful entitlement to exclusive, unqualified, and supreme authority within a
delimited territory))
Inter-governmental organizations (IGOs)
(include at least 3 member
states; they operate and have
activities in several states; created through formal
inter-governmental agreement)
Global civil society actors
(The voluntary non-profit associations that exist outside the state and the market)
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs)
(non-profit private voluntary associations whose members are individuals or associations that come together to achieve a common purpose)
For-profit private sector
(profit-based actors)
Multinational corporations (MNCs)
(organized to conduct
for-profit business
transactions and
operations across 3 or
more states)
What is Realism?
- States are the only relevant actor
- States exist in a self-help system of anarchy
- State interests equated with
increasing security/power - Emphasis on relative gains
- Zero sum game (Gaining more than the others)
What is Offensive Realism?
Maximization of State power and security.
What is Defensive Realism?
Maximization of States own security
