MIDI Flashcards
What does MIDI stand for?
Musical Instrument Digital Interface
Describe how MIDI works.
Rather than using ADCs which sample an analogue waveform at frequent intervals, MIDI uses event messages to represent different notes and their duration.
How do MIDI event messages work?
Clock signals set tempo, Digital signals specify pitch (frequency) and intensity, Control signals manage decorative features such as vibrato and reverb.
Give 2 advantages of using MIDI over traditional sampiling.
Occupies less storage space.
Can be easily manipulated / transposed.
Give 1 disadvantage of MIDI over traditional sampling.
Waveform can often sound unrealistic (however this is sometimes the desired effect).
