Midfoot pathology Flashcards
What are some of the main midfoot problems?
Ganglia
Osteoarthritis
Plantar fribromatosis
What is dorsal foot ganglia?
A ganglion cyst is a sac filled with a jellylike fluid that originates from a tendon sheath or joint capsule
Aetiology of dorsal foot ganglia?
- Idiopathic
- Underlying arthritis
- Underlying tendon pathology
SSx for dorsal foot ganglion?
- Pain from pressure of footwear
- Pain from underlying problem
Management of dorsal foot ganglion?
Prognosis?
Non-operative
- Aspiration
Operative
- Excision
Prognosis: 50% return rate
Types of arthritis that affect midfoot?
- Post-traumatic arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
Treatment of arthritis of midfoot?
Non-operative
- Activity/shoewear/orthotics
Operative
- Fusion
- Xray guided injection
What is plantar fibromatosis?
“relatively uncommon non-malignant thickening of the feet’s deep connective tissue”
- aka Ledderhose disease
- Dupuytren’s of the foot
SSx of plantar fibromatosis?
Usually assymptomatic unless on large weightbearing area!
Treatment of plantar fibromatosis?
Non-operative
- Avoid pressure: footwear change/orthotics
Operative
- Excision [80% risk of recurrance]
