Midetem 1 Ch.14/15 Flashcards
What are the two types of metabolism?
Catabolism
Anabolism
Define Catabolism
The breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, etc..
Define Anabolism
Building up or biosynthesis of macromolecules
What are the high energy intermediates (biochemical fuels) involved in the catabolic to anabolic process?
ATP, NADH, FADH2
What are the three stages of metabolism?
Stage 1: digestion
Stage 2: synthesis of key intermediates
Stage 3: ATP synthesis
Explain stage one of metabolism.
Stage one of metabolism is digestion. This involves the breakdown of proteins, fats, and polysaccharides into amino acids, fatty acids + glycerol, and monosaccharides, respectively.
Explain stage two of metabolism.
Stage two of metabolism is the synthesis of key intermediates.
