Q

What are the main two versions of Muslim and what is the primary difference?

A

The Sunni and Shia Muslims. The division dates back to 632 when the prophet Muhammad died and the following dispute over his successor.

The Sunni form 85% of the Muslim population and are traditional (orthodox) muslims who believe the successor should be chosen using Arab tribal traditions.

The Shia muslims believe the son-in-law, Ali (and his sons Hassan and Hussein— all assassinated), are the rightful leaders of the Islamic community.

Q

Why is there so much hostility in the Middle East?

A

Because for centuries the land was shared by different “tribes” of people (different branches of Muslim).

Europeans tried to draw lines on a map and combine different tribes of people into one nation state.

Hostility arose when one branch of Muslim is supposed to govern another.
