Mechanism of Action
A
- Binds to benzodiazepine receptors and enhances the effects of GABA
- Acts at the level of the limbic, thalamic, & hypothalamic regions of the CNS to produce short-acting CNS depression (including sedation, skelatal muscle relaxation, & anticonvulsant activity)

A
- Sedation
- Anxiety
- Skeletal Muscle relaxation
- Sedation before cardioversion

Contraindications
A
- Acute-angle glaucoma
- Pregnancy
- Known sensitivity

Adverse Effects
A
- Respiratory depression, apnea
- Hypotension
- Drowsiness, fatigue
- Headache, nausea
- Confusion, oversedation

Administration
A
- Adult: 1-5 mg IV/IO
- Peds: Refer to length-weight-based chart

Special Considerations
A
- Patients receiving midazolam require frequent monitoring of vital signs & pulseOx
- Be prepared to support airway & ventilation
