Q

John Stuart Mill

A

The Subjugation of Women. If the authority of men over women was proven to be more effective, then it should happen, but no alternative has been attempted. The current system started to exist with no reason other than that every woman has always been in bondage.

The same as slavery – the law of force: enslave the weak. Unnatural is really uncustomary. Unlike slavery, this is voluntary. Women, now gaining a voice, are protesting against what they at taught is normal and moral. Breaks modern social theory of social mobility and reciprocating ability with reward. Woman subjugation is a breach in a now “fundamental” law. Women perceptions are broken by their absorption of ideas around them.

Sarah Stickney Ellis (English women have more instruction which enables them to be more valuable, help nation through platform of home, a balance for the hard shell society requires a man to wear, education necessary to make woman “what she ought to be,” helping the sick is one of woman’s highest “attainments,” women need intellectual hold on hubby’s heart).

A

The Women of England: Their Social Duties and Domestic Habits. (women as moral center of household, should aim for comfort of spouse. Women’s wants are relatively left out, chamber of sickness is her domain).

Less argumentative (in this excerpt an more reflective).

(poem about dialogue between Romney, [Self-Portrait], [Her mother’s portrait] [Aurora’s Education] [Book 2 – (woman and artist)] [No Female Christ] [Aurora’s Rejection of Romney] [Book 3 – (The woman writer in London)] [Book 5 – (Epic Art and Modern Life)]

A caged bird. Doesn’t like the way women are told to be. Kept her inner fire alive. Is pragmatic. Stifling standards. Unfair generalizations from Romney. Death > silence. We will never get a female Christ (no women could be Christ). I’m took weak to love you, remember?

Women should be educated. The home is wherever the wife is. Need equality to serve one another. All Shakespeare’s women were heroines. Women redeems man. Yin and yang. If you raise girls like sideboard – they’ll be sideboard. Need to educate just as seriously.
