Mid-Term Guide Flashcards
How does a relational-incarnational approach vary from much of what we see in the church?
Worldview, Market, and a Incarnational-Relational Approach.
Worldview Approach
God has a great Argument and explains the world the best
Market Approach
Brand and Strategy, God will benefit you and improve life.
RI approach
God gives Himself to us fully and sacrificially. We need to do the same
How in churches do we see the opposite of the RI Approach (Example = Jesus’ life)
Jesus focused on the other, not himself. Jesus poured himself out and constantly gave himself for the benefits of others
How in churches do we see the opposite of the Worldview approach?
Want to be right, and respected, no matter the cost “Speak the truth in love”
How in churches do we see the opposite of the market approach?
Bait and switch, attraction
CE/IR Scripture
1 Cor 9:19-23
The church is a cultural community, but why?
We are ambassadors, ministers, and sojourners.
How is theology and culture always in conversation with each other?
The universal gospel is expressed uniquely through particulars in individual cultures
How is the gospel expressed in an RI approach in theology and culture
We live and breathe culture, and we also believe it to be true without questioning it. We tend to operate from Christ of culture (Protagonist)
What is culture according to Niebuhr?
culture is that total process of human activity and that total result of such activity to which now the name culture, now the name civilization, is applied in common speech. Culture is the ‘artificial, secondary environment; which man superimposes on the natural. IT IS SOCIAL, IT IS HUMAN ACHIEVEMENT. Culture concerns itself with values
Five options in Christ and Culture?
Christ of Culture (Protagonist) Christ against Culture (Antagonist) Christ and Culture Paradox (Dualist) Christ above Culture (Synthesist) Christ Transforming Culture (Transformationalist)
Which Position of Niebuhr’s is correct out of the five in our class?
There is no right position, each is applied in its own certain context. I believe that Christ is for culture as well as against culture in some happening stance.
Why does M dislike the term transformation of culture?
Transformation implies that something is becoming better.
Fundamental blindness to immoral structural realities
We tend to engage from an individual, relational, anti-structural perspective
Dualistic
The world is evil, leads to social inaction
What does M propose as opposed to a cultural engagement
Take back the inner cities as opposed to America
What is God of the Gaps?
God fills the gaps in human knowledge, explains the unknown, and focsued on personal benefit relevance
How is God of the gallows thinking different?
God did not come to deliver us from suffering, but we will be delivered through suffering
What does the power of christ look like?
Matt. 8:17, Phil 2
Only the suffering God can help
Christ’s display of power different from the evangelical concept of power?
Heb. 13:11-14
How does all of this inform our theology of cultural engagement?
Make room for your views to be heard as well as others. Cruciform life rather than battle for power
How are Occident and Orient different?
Occident: Progress, expansion, advancement, dominance
Orient: Communion, stewardship, simplicity
