Q

Describe 3 causes of the American Revolution:

A
  1. The French and Indian War.
Great Britain helped the colonists defeat the French.
After the war - Great Britain passed the Proclamation of 1763 which prevented western expansion by the colonists. British troops were stationed in the colonies to protect the colonists from the French settlers and Native Americans. The colonists were not happy about this Proclamation
  2. New Taxes and Laws
Supplying British troops during and after the French and Indian War was expensive. The British Parliament decided the colonists should pay a large part of the debt since they benefitted from the war. Parliament thought it was fair to impose new tariffs and laws to pay for the war - - Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Quartering Act, Townshend Act and the Tea Act
  3. Colonial Protests
A group of patriots formed the Sons of Liberty in response to the new taxes and laws. They harassed and threatened stamp distributors and protested in the streets. Sometimes they used violence - such as the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party
  4. Intolerable Acts
The British Parliament issued a number of harsh laws to punish the colonists for their resistance. The laws included the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act , the Administration of Justice Act, the Quartering Act and the Quebec Act. It was also known as the Coercive Acts.
  5. Growing Unity Among Colonists
The British Parliament hoped that the new laws and taxes would control the colonists, but instead the colonists joined together because they felt their basic freedoms were being taken away. The colonists organized the Continental Congress - and began stockpiling weapons’ and formed one unified army. In 1776 the Continental Congress voted to fight for Independence
  6. First Continental Congress
Representatives from the colonies met in 1774 to write a petition to British King George III to repeal the Intolerable Acts.
They denounced taxation without representation, and stated they did not want British troops to remain in the colonies.
They established a British goods boycott and proclaimed that they had the rights to life, liberty and property.

Give examples of the roles Native Americans played in the American Revolution

A

*Began to see the war as a threat to their freedom and land
*Many were on the side of the British because they saw the colonist as a greater threat - The British passed a law preventing colonist from moving WEST of the Appalachian Mountains
*They were hoping if Great Britain won the war the colonist would stop settling and spreading to their lad
*If they sided with the colonist it was due to the personal relationship between the colonist and Native Americans
*Believed the colonist had a right to fight for their freedom
*This caused a divide in the tribes that were once allies - and they began fighting each other (Iroquois)
