The concept of the multigenerational transmission process describes how small differences in the levels of differentiation between parents and their offspring lead over many generations to marked differences in differentiation among the members of a multigenerational family.

How do family rules change when recovery starts?
the rules may be more or less strict depending on what role the addict has, the focus is on the addiction rather than on the rules

it could create new boundaries and identities that change the family system
enabler
lacks self care bc taking care of person with sud, no strong identity, finds fulfillment in rescuing, prevents addict for change
hero
converts pressure to rescue the family and returns it to homeostasis, learned to take on responsibility early, high motivation and achiever, has internal self doubts and judgement
scapegoat
builds resentment towards hero, mimics responsibilities, never validated by the parents, believes that they cannot avoid trouble, other family roles turn emotions inward and tries to hide them, they externalize emotions which embarrasses the family.
lost child
family overlooks them, builds fantasy world, learns to become emotionally distant from the family, learns to not rock the boat, does not get rewarded for achievements
mascot
uses humor and charm to defuse family problems, family does not take them seriously, has low expectations for them, family shields them, their avoidant behaviors make it hard to have personal relationships
Hero with recovery
hero suffers form anxiety as is motivated to enable others
Scapegoat with recovery
may have the addictive behavior or is blamed for someone else having an addictive behavior
Lost child with recovery
the fantasy world is reinforced when others act on the addictive behavior
