classification shared by a broad range of dance styles before the 1950s this term refers to styles originating from African American dance by the 1950s it refers to a combination of modern jazz dance and Caribbean original roots.
Jazz dance
organization of the body on relationship to dance
Alignment
Demi small or half. Grand big. Bend of the knees which align over the big and second toe
Plié
to stretch. push the foot along the floor to a fully pointed toe.
Tendu
a poorly aligned foot that leans towards the pinky toe
Sickled foot
rotation of the legs outward by engaging the rotator muscles around the hips
Turn out
positions of the legs with the knees and toes facing front
Parallel
to rise to the balls of the feet
Releve
to disengage a tendu which releases off the floor.
Dégagé
part of the dancers alignment the dancer must stay balanced through a center line running up and down the mid line of the torso while standing on two feet and while on one foot that line must shift through the middle of the standing foot and rise through and even torso and pelvis both horizontally and vertically.
Centering
movement of a single body part as a pose to whole body movements
Isolation
to cut, position of the foot held at the ankle of the other leg
Coupe
to pass, position of the foot touching the opposite leg at the knee joint
Passé/ retire
to twirl or spin complete turn done on one foot with other leg in passé or coupe in parallel or turn out
Pirouette
to chase or chased. Movement forward to give appearance of one foot chasing the other from its position. Done typically jumping
