Excommunication
The formal exclusion of a person from the religious community or church
Expansionism
a government policy stating territorial expansion to another piece of land

A social system in medieval Europe that ranked the people

based on classes of status or authority
Manors
Large estates in medieval Europe included land, a village, and the people working it.
Freemen
own land, leave the manor without permission, had more of a legal role and had some, not much profit
serfs
lowest class, had no power got no profits and was a slave to the lord or mannor
Monastery
A building where monks or nuns live
Sumptuary Laws
Laws that regulate what people are allowed to wear, based on social class or rank
Tithe
A form of tax, usually 10%, paid to the church or clergy
City-states
Independent, self-governing cities that control surrounding territories.

The rural or less-developed area surrounding a city or port

what was a crusade
a religious war primarily between Catholics and Muslims fighting over Jerusalem
how did a crusade impact the rest of Europe
a shift in power, the start of trade, lots of deaths and new learnings
Impacts of the plague
many deaths ( 50% of the population) stopped trusting the church, the fall of feudalism
