Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
a law that makes available a free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation
Response to Intervention (RtI)
educational strategy used in schools to: Provide effective and high-quality instruction, Monitor all students’ progress to make sure they are progressing as expected, and. Provide additional support (intervention) to students who are struggling.
Learning Disabilities (LD)
disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD)
a condition that affects people’s behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse.
Emotional Behavioral Disorders (EBD)
an emotional disorder characterized by excesses, deficits or disturbances of behavior.
Emotional Disturbance (ED)
a condition exhibiting one or more of the following characteristics over a long period of time and to a marked degree that adversely affects a child’s educational performance: (A) An inability to learn that cannot be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors.
Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) also known as Intellectual Disabilities (ID)
disorders that are usually present at birth and that negatively affect the trajectory of the individual’s physical, intellectual, and/or emotional development…intellectual disability is a term used when there are limits to a person’s ability to learn at an expected level and function in daily life.
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
kids who get special education should be in the same classrooms as other kids as much as possible.
Related services
services required through IDEA for students with disabilities that enable them to benefit from special education. may include transportation speech therapy and adaptive physical education.
Multi-disciplinary teams
team of teachers, specialists, administrators, and parents who asses a student’s individual needs, determine eligibility for special education and develop the iep
Collaboration
to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor
Brown versus Board of Education of Topeka Kansas
decision clarifying that separate cannot be equal some professionals began questioning whether separate classes provide students with disabilities and appropriate education
Pennsylvania Association for retarded children versus the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania parents
warned the guarantee that education did not mean only traditional academic instruction and that the children with intellectual disabilities could benefit from education tailored to the needs of their children and could not be denied access to public schools and they were entitled to a free public education
Mills versus Board of Education
a class action lawsuit on behalf of the 18,000 children in Washington d.c. schools whose pupils included those with an entire range of disabilities the court ordered the district to educate all rooms including those with disabilities
Diana versus State Board of Education of California,
the Spanish-speaking child was placed in a class for students with mild intellectual disabilities after she was schooled on an IQ test because it was administered in English
