Microscopy Flashcards
Microscopy
The technical field of using microscopes to view small stuff
Magnification
The ability to view an object as larger/the function of making an object appear bigger
Resolution
The amount of detail you can see
The ability to measure the separation of images that are close together
Field of View
The area viewed when looking into a microscope
Larger mag = lower FOV
Lower mag = higher FOV
Compound Light Microscope
Magnification 40- 1000x
Good for viewing thin sections of specimens that are micrometers in length and width: cells, protozoan, some bacteria
Multiple lenses
The light source is underneath the specimen
Stereo/Dissecting Microscope
Magnification 10 to 40x
Designed for viewing 3D objects such as rocks, insects, and flowers, but can also be used for viewing prepared slides
Helpful tool for nature studies
Lower power than compound microscopes
Pocket/Field Microscope
Magnification 60-120
Very small
Often used to view 3D specimen
SEM Scanning Electron Microscope
Magnification 2,000,000+
Electrons bounce off the specimen
Produces a 3D image with great surface detail
TEM Transmission Electron Microscope
Uses an accelerated beam of electrons
Wet Mount
Temporary
Made in the lab
Used to view moving organisms
Prepared Slide
Permanent
