Microscopy Flashcards
microscopy
the use and study of a microscope
Magnification
zooming in on a specimen (make small big)
Resolution
the ability to distinguish two objects as separate. The amount of detail you can see.
Field of veiw
the area visible through your microscope eyepiece. The lower the magnification the higher the field of view
Compound light microscope
A microscope that uses multiple lenses to change magnification
Stereo/dissecting microscope
A microscope used to view 3-d objects and used for dissection
Pocket/field microscope
A handheld microscope that is easy to transport
Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
A microscope that Can magnify over 2,000,000 x. Electrons bounce off the specimen. It produces a three dimensional image with great surface detail
transmitting electron microscope (TEM)
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a technique used to observe the features of very small specimens. The technology uses an accelerated beam of electrons, which passes through a very thin specimen that allows scientists to observe features such as structure and morphology.
Wet mount slide
A slide that needs a drop of water to prepare
Spontaneous generation
The idea that inanimate object create organism
Francesco Redi
He proved that spontaneous generation does not exist. He put meat in an open jar, in a jar with holes on top but, and a completely covered jars. This showed that the flies were not produced by meat.
Maria Sibylla Merian
documented insect metamorphosis through drawing
Louis Pasteur
Helped develop the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization. He discovered that heat killed bacteria. He used a vial with boiled soup broke the vial to get bacteria. There was no bacteria in one without a break to show there was no bacteria. He showed that broth does not just go bad.
Hans and Zacharias Janssen
They created the first microscope by combining two complex lens. (1665)
