Microscopy Flashcards
What is the stain, morphology and organism visualized?
Toxoplasma gondii
Tachyzoites 4-8 uM x 2-3
Giemsa stain
Description: tapered anterior end, a blunt posterior end and a large nucleus. They may be found in various sites throughout the body of the host
What is the stain, morphology and organism visualized?
Toxoplasma gondii sporulated oocyst in an unstained wet mount.
Mature oocysts measure 10-12 µm in diameter and contain two sporocysts.
What is the stain, morphology and organism visualized?
Toxoplasma gondii cyst in brain tissue stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Cysts of Toxoplasma gondii usually range in size from 5-50 µm in diameter. Cysts are usually spherical in the brain but more elongated in cardiac and skeletal muscles. They may be found in various sites throughout the body of the host, but are most common in the brain and skeletal and cardiac muscles.
What is the stain and organism visualized?
T. brucei spp.
Giemsa stain
A typical trypomastigote has a small kinetoplast located at the posterior end, a centrally located nucleus, an undulating membrane, and a flagellum running along the undulating membrane, leaving the body at the anterior end. Trypomastigotes are the only stage found in patients. Trypanosomes range in length from 14 to 33 µm.

What is the stain and organism visualized?
A typical trypomastigote has a large, subterminal or terminal kinetoplast, a centrally located nucleus, an undulating membrane, and a flagellum running along the undulating membrane, leaving the body at the anterior end. Trypanosomes measure from 12 to 30 µm in length. Note the typical C-shape of the trypomastigote that characterizes T. cruzi in fixed blood smears.
What is the organism and stain visualized?
Trypanosoma cruzi amastigotes in heart tissue. The section is stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). The amastigotes of T. cruzi are morphologically indistinguishable from those of Leishmania spp.
